After relocating to Fort Morgan, I was elected as the Chair of the Morgan County Democrats to fill a vacancy in the summer of 2022. During our County Reorganization meeting in February 2023, I was elected to serve a full term, which has involved holding Central Committee Meetings, recruiting poll watchers and election judges, and introducing our first County Commissioner candidates in over a decade.
The Morgan County Officers organized meet-and-greet events for our 2022 statewide candidates, including Phil Weiser, Jena Griswold, and Kathy Plomer, as well as the 2023 State Party Chair candidates, Tim Kubik and Howard Chou.
In 2024, Morgan County successfully opened a County Party Office for the first time since our previous office closed in 2019. Having an operational office in Fort Morgan has enabled us to distribute candidate yard signs, recruit volunteers, host discussions regarding the 14 ballot measures, and provide a welcoming space for Democrats throughout the county to convene.
In 2021, I was appointed to lead the Stonewall Democrats of Colorado and subsequently elected Chair. The COVID-19 pandemic provided us with an opportunity to enhance Stonewall's visibility, transitioning from primarily a Front Range organization to a truly statewide initiative, with members and officers representing diverse regions including the Western Slope and Eastern Plains.
Our membership and support base expanded significantly following our participation in Pride events held in Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Broomfield, and Boulder. Additionally, Stonewall increased its outreach by establishing a booth at the CRGA Gay Rodeo during its time at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
We have also strengthened our network through a renewed partnership with One Colorado, ensuring our representation at the annual LGBTQIA+ Lobby Day at the Colorado State Capitol.
In 2023, I was approached by two candidates seeking the position of Chair for Congressional District 4 (CD4) to run for the role of First Vice Chair. This position was expected to have minimal impact, as Republican Ken Buck had been elected in the previous two cycles by margins exceeding 20 points. However, I soon realized how this role could influence the Congressional District Central Committee's capacity to support underrepresented candidates in areas where Democrats have not been competitive since the implementation of the 50 State Strategy during the Obama administration in 2008.
CD4 is distinctive within Colorado, as it is the only Congressional District Central Committee that has ratified rules in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes, Title 1. These regulations enabled CD4 Officers to engage in fundraising and execute unprecedented voter outreach initiatives across Colorado's Eastern Plains.
As we commenced the 2024 election cycle, Democrats in various regions—including eastern Adams, eastern Arapahoe, Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Elbert, eastern El Paso, Kiowa, Kit Carson, eastern Larimer, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Prowers, Sedgwick, Washington, northern Weld, and Yuma Counties—received postcards detailing information about in-person and virtual caucuses, assemblies, and conventions hosted by the CD4 Democrats in counties lacking a Democratic Party presence. This outreach created an inclusive environment for communities that felt marginalized or where voters were hesitant to disclose their Democratic affiliation to neighbors. CD4 also organized both in-person and virtual town halls for primary candidates in Lamar, Fort Morgan, and Douglas County.
It is noteworthy that a U.S. House member from Colorado has not resigned mid-term since the early 1980s. The CD4 Officers oversaw a Special Convention to nominate a candidate for the Special Election ballot. This was a unique experience for nearly all precinct organizers and party leaders involved.
During the General Election cycle, we experienced a significant influx of donations to our candidate, which allowed CD4 to contribute $1,000 each to three rural County Commissioner candidates in Morgan and Lincoln Counties, in addition to a $10,000 donation to the CD4 State Board of Education candidate. During this cycle, we were able to phone bank, text, and robo call more voters than ever across the district.
